The Anthonian Winter 2012—2013A question for you, a riddle to think about — what do Super Bowl crowds, Girl Scout jamborees, church gatherings and political rallies have in common? The answer: Spirit! They all have Spirit–an enthusiasm, a joy and shared values at these gatherings. People share an enthusiasm for the values of their sisters and brothers, of their teams, and they care about each other.
Spirit, liveliness about Franciscan people and values is what this issue of The Anthonian is all about!
This issue celebrates the core values of the Franciscan Family – of which you are all a part! In this exciting winter edition of the magazine, Father Russell writes about our greatest treasure, the Eucharist, the center of St. Francis’s life and our life of faith. Our founder’s enthusiasm about the Eucharist is a mainstay in our life as Franciscans.
You will read about Fr. Emmett’s Franciscan journey. He calls you “his dear family members of St. Anthony’s Guild,” and tells you frankly about the joys and pitfalls of his life and the spirited love and care he received from his brother friars. Fr. Emmett experienced what St. Francis speaks about when he says: “If a mother loves her child, how much more should the friars love each other?”
Fr. Joseph and Fr. Ignatius speak about our Franciscan core values of caring for the poor, accepting those who are marginalized from society and the Church, and caring for God’s beautiful creation. And you will read about parishioners in our Franciscan St. Mary’s parish in Pompton Lakes, who engage in a ministry toward persons grieving over personal loss.
The Franciscan spirit is filled with the love of these values, with a great sense of humor and with the ability to enjoy God and all God’s people, you, our sisters and brothers.
That’s Franciscan–and you are a part of it all!
